Suffolk’s professional symphony orchestra makes its debut at the Ely Arts Festival with a tantalising programme of Mendelssohn favourites.
From the particular feel and look of the ocean swell as it crashes against the shaded majesty of the basalt columns of Fingal’s Cave in the Hebrides, to the sunshine and swirling colours of Italian peasant dancing in the frenzied Tarantella, Mendelssohn had a vivid sense of place and the gift to capture it in his music – hence the title, Sunshine and Shade.
Prize-winning young French violinist Carlotte Saluste-Bridoux plays Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, surely one of the most compelling works in a highly compelling category of composition.
